Description

The beautiful Butterfly Cluster (cataloged as Messier 6 and NGC 6405) is an open cluster about 15490 light-years away in Scorpius, with an apparent size of 25'.
120 stars, ranging down to mag 15, have been identified as most likely cluster members. Most of the bright stars are hot, blue B-type stars, but the brightest member is BM Scorpii, a K-type orange giant star which contrasts sharply with its blue neighbours.
